The Suzuki GSX 1100 G is a motorcycle in the tourer category and, because of its dimensions and weight, is one of the representatives of the "naked big bikes" (unclad motorcycles over 1000 cm³) of the 300 kg class and was nicknamed "iron piles" or " Iron Pig ".

With the card-driven GSX 1100 G, Suzuki wanted to expand its range of everyday motorcycles upwards in 1991. The big bike originally intended for the US market was also imported to Germany. To this end, adjustments were made to the chassis and electrics.

The GSX1100G is often seen as the "big sister" of the Suzuki VX 800 among Suzuki drivers . Despite the completely different engine design (V2 engine on the VX 800, in-line four-cylinder on the GSX 1100 G), this relationship stems from the similar tour-suitable design, the cardan drive and, last but not least, the similar chassis dimensions.

Model history

Suzuki GSX 1100 G with Gimbel half-shell and Givi cases

The GSX 1100 G was manufactured from 1991. It was imported to Germany from 1991 to 1995, and sales continued until 1996. Since German customers were not particularly fond of the heavy and unmanageable motorcycle, the last copies were sold with sometimes adventurous discounts. At the end of 1996, with a bit of luck, you could buy a full 1,100 cc tourer for just over 10,000 DM.

In addition to the official imports, some machines came to Germany from other European countries and the USA.

The 1,100 cm³ air / oil-cooled engine goes back to the first generation of the GSX-R models. Bore and stroke are identical to the GSX-R1100 and GSX1100F models. In the case of the “G”, the deflection unit for the shaft drive and an externally adjustable balance shaft were also installed.

The chassis and engine are designed for durability and touring suitability. The legitimate successor to Suzuki's touring bikes like GS 850 G and GS 1000 G / GS 1100 G has like this one a cardan drive in a remarkably long swing arm, a conventional chassis with central spring strut and a chassis layout designed more for stable straight-line stability. Classic and undisguised, with a large tank and a comfortable upright seating position, the machine was still only sold slowly to the few fans of this type of motorcycle.

Special certificate for a mileage of more than 100,000 km from "SUZUKI INTERNATIONAL EUROPE GmbH" to the first owner.

Since the appearance of the much more successful GSF 1200 "Bandit" (with chain drive), the "G" was condemned to a niche existence. Quite a few machines were converted into a team.

There were hardly any modifications in the short model period. There were minor equipment changes and chassis improvements for the German models, from 1993 the rims and the paintwork of the engine were changed (previously: light silver, later titanium / dark silver).

equipment

Due to the short model running time and the relatively small number of units, there are only a few special accessories on the market for the GSX 1100 G. The company Gimbel, as well as another company, manufactured half-shell panels for the "G" model, suitcase and topcase racks are available from the usual companies for motorcycle luggage racks, which make it possible to equip the motorcycle with suitcases from 22 l to 46 l.

Some manufacturers of exhaust systems for motorcycles produce 4-in-1 or 4-in-2-in-1 systems for the "G" (the original is a 4-in-2 system).

At times, a sporty footrest system was also offered.

However, since the G contains many components from parallel or later Suzuki models, accessories for these machines partially fit. In particular the GSF 1200 Bandit and the other GSX models have a lot in common with the G.
