The Suzuki GSX 550 is a motorcycle model from Suzuki . The sports tourer was produced from 1982 to 1988 in two model series and three different versions (EU, ES, EF). The additions after the model name indicate the type of cladding. EU stands for the bare version, ES for a half shell and EF for full cladding.

Development history

The engine of the original model, which was produced until 1984, developed 47 kW (64 hp). This motorcycle was only offered as an ES version in blue / white paint. On the occasion of the facelift for 1985, the fully faired EF version was added to the ES version and the engine output was increased to 50 kW (68 PS). From this point onwards, the EU version, which was only equipped with an instrument panel, was sold. The engine of this model had an output of 37 kW (50 hp), which enabled it to be classified in an insurance class that was much cheaper at the time. Therefore, many ES and EF models were operated with corresponding throttling. Until the end of production in 1986, there were no more model maintenance measures, apart from changes in the paintwork.

In Austria, for insurance reasons, there was the GSX 500 with a cubic capacity reduced to 498 cm³ and 60 hp. The engine differs from the normal GSX 550 by different connecting rods, a crankshaft with a stroke shortened to 44.1 mm, different camshafts and an adapted carburetor nozzle.
