Sven-Ivar Seldinger

Sven-Ivar Seldinger (born April 19, 1921 in Mora ; † February 19 or February 21, 1998 there ) was a Swedish radiologist . He developed the Seldinger technique named after him , a method for puncturing blood vessels that is used in numerous medical procedures.

Life

Seldinger attended schools in Mora and Falun . From 1940 to 1948 he studied medicine at the Karolinska Institute in Solna near Stockholm . After graduating, he worked in various hospitals, from 1949 to 1966 at the Karolinska Hospital, where he was trained as a radiologist from 1950. In 1966 he received his doctorate at the Karolinska Institute with writing Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography . He then briefly worked as a lecturer at the Ekmanska Hospital in Gothenburg before becoming head of the radiology department in his hometown Mora hospital. In 1986 he retired. In 1991 he was the Theodore J. and Jean W. Castele Professor of Radiology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland .

Sven-Ivar Seldinger was married to Britt-Lis Erlandsson from 1948 and was the father of three daughters.

Act

In the early 1950s, Seldinger developed the Seldinger technique named after him , a method for puncturing blood vessels that is used in numerous medical catheterization procedures . The technique was presented at the meeting of the Nordic Association of Medical Radiology in Helsinki in June 1952 and published in Acta Radiologica in 1953 . The technology replaced a large number of other procedures, some of which were more complex or less secure. Seldinger used the method for catheterizing the spleen and liver , measuring pressure in the portal vein and arteriography of the extremities.
