Sven Ratzke (* 1977 ) is a German-Dutch musician, stage entertainer and musical performer. His style is a mixture of modern vaudeville cabaret, chansons, pop, jazz and storytelling.

Life

Ratzke grew up in Kranenburg near the Dutch border.

He has performed his solo shows since 2000 and has since toured the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, France ( Avignon Festival ), Scotland ( Edinburgh Festival ), Switzerland, Austria and the USA. Hildegard Knef asked him to interpret a song of hers for A Woman and a Half (2001), a documentary about her life.

Since 2011, Ratzke has been performing in the US at Joe's Pub at the Public Theater and giving concerts in New York's Lincoln Center . In London, Ratzke played at the Soho Theater and gave concerts at the Southbank. Since 2014 Ratzke has been touring Australia every year, where he appears at festivals and in concert halls (including the Sydney Operahouse, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Brisbane Festival).

Ratzke worked a. a together with Nina Hagen , Katharina Thalbach, Hanna Schygulla , Tiger Lillies and Romy Haag . For his German Nights in Amsterdam he invited various artists. He has performed with New York downtown legend Joey Arias , Dutch singer Ellen ten Damme and US soprano Claron McFadden . In Germany Ratzke u. a. in the Tipi at the Chancellery in Berlin, Berliner Ensemble , Schmidt Theater Hamburg, Tollwood Munich or at the Ruhrtriennale . He gave concerts with the Metropole Orkest and the Asko | Schönberg Ensemble.

Ratzke played the main role in various musical productions such as B. Cabaret . In the 2012 season he and Claron McFadden brought a new interpretation of the Threepenny Opera to the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) . From 2013 to 2016 he played the leading role in the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch in the Admiralspalast Berlin. The author and star of the New York original cast, John Cameron Mitchell, called Ratzke 'the best Hedwig I've ever seen'. In October 2015 his show Starman with music by David Bowie premiered in Berlin. Ratzke toured the world with the show and performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2016 . Ratzke was also nominated as Best Cabaret Performer for the Helpmann Award in Sydney, Australia in 2017. His show Homme Fatale had its premiere in October 2017 in the Tipi at the Chancellery in Berlin. The music for this show may originate from a. by Rufus Wainwright , David Bowie, Lisa Hanningan, Fay Lovsky and Eddie Perfect. The costumes were designed by the French star designer Thierry Mugler , who has already worked for stars such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga and David Bowie. In the same year, his TV show Ratzke Rendezvous , a late night show with celebrity guests, premiered on ARD.

Ratzke writes songs, plays and columns, among others for the Dutch daily De Gelderlander . He released various CDs, including a. at the record label Challenge Records International. He lives in Amsterdam and Berlin.
