Svetla Slateva

Svetla Slatewa ( Bulgarian Светла Златева , English transcription Svetla Zlateva, temporarily Златева-Колева - Slatewa-Kolewa - Zlateva-Koleva ; born February 25, 1952 in Gorna Orjachgariza and sprinter ) is a former Bulgarian middle distance runner .

At the European Athletics Indoor Championships , she won bronze in the 4 x 400 meter relay in 1971 and bronze over 800 m in 1972.

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich she set an Olympic record with 1: 58.93 min. In the final, however, Hildegard Falck (FRG) with 1: 58.55 and Nijolė Sabaitė (URS) with 1: 58.65 both remained below this mark, and Slatewa only came fourth behind Gunhild Hoffmeister (GDR).

The following year, on August 24th, she set a world record over 800 m with 1: 57.48 minutes in Piraeus . At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, she was seventh over 800 m. In the 4 x 400 meter relay, she was eliminated with the Bulgarian team in the preliminary run.

Shortly afterwards she married the wrestler Iwan Kolew , and at the Universiade 1977 she won bronze in the 800 m.

Her last international success was winning the silver medal over 800 m at the European Indoor Championships in 1981, where she competed again under her maiden name.

She was Bulgarian champion in 1971 and 1976 over 400 m , 1973 over 800 m and 1500 m . In the hall she won three national titles over 400 m (1971-1973) and once over 800 m (1981).
