Swamp Devil (Original title: Swamp Devil , also: Swamp Devil - The evil lurks beneath the surface and Swamp Devil - The curse of the monster ) is a horror film by director David Winning from 2008 with Bruce Dern , Cindy Sampson and Nicolas Wright .

action

Melanie Blaime broke off contact with her father many years ago and is leading an independent life when she suddenly receives a call from her hometown Gibbington. Jimmy Fuller, who pretends to be an old childhood friend, lures Melanie into the small town with the claim that her father, ex- Sheriff Howard, is terminally ill.

Melanie drives to Gibbington the same day and is expected by Jimmy at the place name sign . In his mother's restaurant, he reveals to her that Melanie's father is not sick, but is rather wanted as the main suspect in a gruesome murder case: A girl was found murdered and her father has since disappeared. The sheriff Nelson Bois and his deputy Jolene Harris are looking for him together with the father of the murdered girl Jones. Melanie can't believe what her father is accused of and so the two drive to his house, which they find uninhabited. Melanie spends the night in the simple hut after Jimmy agrees to look after her in a chair by the fireplace for the night. The next morning, however, it disappeared - Melanie only discovers a few unusual traces of mud on the old floorboard .

In the meantime, another resident of the small town disappears. Melanie finds some newspaper articles in two loose floorboards and realizes that it must be a monster that is systematically attacking individual residents of the city. Melanie tells Sheriff Bois about her premonition - and about Jimmy. Bois can't remember ever seeing the boy in his small town. When he happened to meet him shortly afterwards, he asked him questions, but received only evasive answers. Shortly afterwards, Sheriff Bois is also found murdered by Deputy Harris. Eventually Melanie meets her father in his house. He tells her about a boy who died in the swamp many years ago, now as a kind of ghost goes mischief to take revenge on everyone who did not help him back then. There is a confrontation between Harris, Jones, Melanie and Howard. Harris struggles to prevent Jones from shooting Howard. Melanie convinces the two that it was not their father but a monster who committed the crimes - and that it is Jimmy who can turn into the monster. The four decide to look for it in the swamp. The monster attacks Jones and kills him. Howard and Melanie realize that Jimmy has the ability to transform only within the city limits. So they lure the monster together with Harris with the help of two vehicles to the exit of the town. There Howard succeeds in hurling the monster over the community boundary with a targeted collision, whereupon it crumbles into mud and dirt.

In the final scene Jimmy's mother can be seen in the swamp. A hand made of dry branches appears out of the water and shakes it.

criticism

The critics of the program magazine TV Spielfilm give the strip a symbolic "thumbs to the side" and judge that "the tree monster ... is only one of the shortcomings of this cheap production", but "at least ... in the second half it is [going] quite moody. ". They sum up: "This horror certainly does not take root."

"A horror film that almost doggedly avoids horror and, at best, deserves a little residual attention thanks to the cast and a very solid production."
