The Swanland was a coaster that was built in 1977 at Scheepswerf "Friesland" in Lemsterland - Lemmer as Carebeka IX and operated in 2011 by Torbulk based in Grimsby . The ship sank on November 27, 2011 with 3,000 tons of sandstone on board during a storm in the Irish Sea off the Welsh coast.

Downfall

The Swanland was hit on November 27, 2011 by a wave unusually high for the North Atlantic . After the freighter leaked and water seeped in, the eight-person crew made an emergency call at 2:00 a.m. local time. Two Russian crew members were pulled from the life raft into the helicopter by the helicopter rescue team of the British Royal Air Force in Anglesey, Wales. A seaman could no longer be saved. Five crew members, including the 44-year-old captain of the Swanland Yuri Schmeljow, were initially considered missing. The co-pilot of the rescue helicopter was "Flight Lieutenant Wales" alias Prince William .
