Svetlana Jakowlewna Bersina ( Russian Светлана Яковлевна Берзина ; born March 7, 1932 in Moscow ; † April 24, 2012 there ) was a Soviet - Russian Africanist .

Life

Bersina graduated from the Department of Archeology of the Faculty of History at the University of Kiev in 1954.

From 1954 Bersina worked as a research assistant in the Historical-Archaeological Museum Kerch .

1960–1981 Bersina worked in Moscow in the basic library for general sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in the sector for the countries of Asia and Africa . In addition, she graduated from 1965-1970 as a trainee at the Institute for Oriental Languages ​​at Lomonossow University Moscow (now Institute of the Countries of Asia and Africa ) and taught at the Department of African Studies . In 1970 she successfully defended her dissertation on the educational conditions in Old Ghana for her doctorate as a candidate in the historical sciences . In 1977 she began her doctoral thesis at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in the Department of Ancient Oriental Studies. In 1979, she successfully defended her doctoral dissertation on Meroe and the surrounding world in the 1st to 8th centuries for her doctorate in history. She then became an employee of the Moscow Museum of the Orient and remained so until her death.

In 1987, Bersina became a board member of the Society of Friendship of the USSR and the Arab Republic of Egypt .

Bersina was a recognized expert on the history and culture of Meroe and participated in many international Meroe conferences. She examined the role of art in the contacts between ancient and oriental civilizations. For more than 15 years she was the curator of the Foundation for Gems , Stamp Seals and Bulls of the Orient , to whose design she made a significant contribution. In 2010 she published a catalog of ancient gems from the Orient. Their collaboration with private collectors served to enrich the museum collections. She created the catalog of weapons and metal art objects of tropical Africa for the Museum of the Orient. She participated in the museum's exhibition activities and prepared several exhibitions.
