Syarwan Hamid (born November 10, 1943 in Dusun Pusaka, Pusako, Siak, Riau Province ) is a former lieutenant general of the armed forces of Indonesia as well as an Indonesian politician of the party of functional groups Golkar and later the Indonesian Unity Party (Partai Persatuan Indonesia) , who, among other things, between 1998 and was Minister of the Interior in 1999.

Life

Syarwan Hamid graduated from the National Military Academy Akademi Militer Nasional and then found various uses as an officer in the Army of the Armed Forces of Indonesia ABRI (Angkatan Bersenjata Republic of Indonesia) . He was also a graduate of the Army Staff and Command School SESKOAD (Sekolah Staf dan Komando Angkatan Darat) and the National Resilience Institute LEMHANNAS (Lembaga Ketahanan Nasional) . In 1985 he was an officer in the Resor Militer 063 comando stationed in Cirebon and was subsequently transferred to the Military District Command III in Siliwangi (Daerah Militer III / Siliwangi) in 1986 . In 1988 he took over a position in the Army Information Service (Dinas Penerangan ABRI Angkatan Darat) and in 1989 as a territorial assistant in the Jakarta Regional Military Command (Daerah Militer Jaya / Jayakarta Command) . In 1990 he moved to the Resor Militer 011 comando stationed in Lhokseumawe and was a colonel between 1991 and 1992 as its commander. During this time he also carried out operations against the Free Aceh Movement (Gerakan Aceh Merdeka) , an armed liberation movement in the province of Aceh in northern Sumatra , which sought the independence of the province.

Subsequently Hamid was Brigadier General (Brigadir Jenderal) between 1992 and 1993 head of the Army Information Service and from 1993 to 1995 head of the Information Center of the Armed Forces (Kepala Pusat Penerangan ABRI) . After he was as Major General (Mayor Jenderal) between 1995 and 1996 Deputy Chief of Staff for Social Policy (Asisten Sosial Politik Kepala Staf Sosial Politik ABRI) , he acted as Lieutenant General (Letnan Jenderal) from 1996 to 1997, finally as Chief of Staff for ABRI Social Policy (Kepala Staf Sosial Politics) . As a representative of the armed forces, he acted from October 1, 1997 to May 23, 1998 as deputy chairman of the MPR (Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat) People's Consultative Assembly .

After President Suharto's resignation on May 21, 1998, Syarwin Hamid was appointed by the new President, the previous Vice-President Bacharuddin Jusuf Habibie , to succeed R. Hartono as Minister of the Interior (Menteri Dalam Negeri) in the Development Reform Cabinet (Kabinet Reformasi Pembangunan) . In addition, Bambang Subianto succeeded Fuad Bawazier as the new finance minister, while foreign minister Ali Alatas and defense minister General Wiranto retained their offices. He held the post of Minister of the Interior until September 27, 1999, after which Soerjadi Soedirdja became his successor.
