Ali Alatas (born November 4, 1932 in Jakarta , † December 11, 2008 in Singapore ) was a politician and former Foreign Minister of Indonesia . Until his death he was the United Nations Special Envoy for Myanmar .

Life

Alatas studied law at Jakarta University and moved to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1954 after previously working for the national news agency. He initially worked in Bangkok and then became responsible for press work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This coincided with the Konfrontasi , a conflict between Indonesia and Malaysia . After the change in political order, Alatas served in Washington, DC and was head of cabinet with Secretary of State Adam Malik from 1972 to 1975 .

Alatas played a key role in resolving the crisis in Cambodia and served as chair of the International Conference on Cambodia , which in Paris in October 1991 resolved to end the crisis. Alatas also helped resolve the conflict between the Government of the Philippines and the Moro National Liberation Front in 1996 that had smoldered for more than twenty years.

Alatas briefly held a position at the UN in Geneva before he was appointed Secretary to Vice President Adam Malik. In 1983, Alata became Indonesia's permanent representative to the United Nations in New York until he was appointed Foreign Minister in March 1988. He held this position until October 1999 and gained a high reputation in Indonesia. When President Habibie voted for an independence referendum in East Timor in 1999 , it was Alatas, who publicly opposed it in the cabinet.

In 2003, Alatas was named the United Nations Special Envoy to Burma . In this capacity, on August 18, 2005, he held talks with the Burmese government regarding the release of Aung San Suu Kyi .

Alatas suffered a minor heart attack in May 1994 and had to undergo bypass surgery. He then suffered a stroke and died of another heart attack on November 8, 2008 at the side of his family at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.
