After the birth of her son (1983) and daughter (1985), she was a member of the council of Bergfeld and the Brome community from 1986-1996 and since 1987 member of the Brome Partnership Committee .

As early as 1987 she started her work for humanitarian aid in Afghanistan. Since 1994 she has been the founder and chairwoman of the organization for humanitarian aid in Afghanistan Katachel e. V. The association, which was named after the village of Katachel near Kunduz , wants to focus its work on helping people to help themselves on site in Afghanistan.

By 2016, Schnehage and the Katachel eV association had 27 schools built in the Kunduz region, and by 2017 there were 31 schools. The association runs a sewing project on site and supports over 400 widows and orphans. From 2004 to the beginning of 2010, Christian Wulff was the project's patron. The Afghan project manager had embezzled money and real estate, which caused the association to receive negative headlines in 2010.
