Publication controversy: Aristotle on Mont Saint-Michel

In 2008 the Paris publisher Éditions du Seuil published the book Aristote au Mont-Saint-Michel in its series L'univers historique . Les racines grecques de l'Europe chrétienne . It completely contradicts the opinion generally held up to then that the Islamic world played an important role in imparting ancient Greek knowledge of philosophy, medicine and other sciences to the world of the West . For the author, the Arabic language and the thinking of Islam are not suitable for promoting rational thinking.

The positive criticism of this work, especially by Roger-Pol Droit in Le Monde and others, caused an outcry among medieval historians. It was pointed out that Gouguenheim's theses were very close to those of Jacques Heers and applied the ideas of Rémi Brague to the field of philosophy . Few French scientists like Claude Gauvard supported Gouguenheim.

There were also neutral votes on Gouguenheim's book. However, many scholars, including those from the Islamic world who were doing research with Gouguenheim at the same time at the same institute in Lyon, the CIHAM, questioned his theses. In Germany in 2008, the philosophy historian and Arabist Dag Nikolaus Hasse from Würzburg turned against this publication. In the FAZ of June 19, 2008, he called it a dubious book, saturated with ideology, covered with the deceptive varnish of erudition , the manifesto of cultural racism . On the occasion of the publication of a German version of the book in 2011 by the Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft , Darmstadt, the same newspaper repeated the allegations and cited historians and Islamic scholars who accuse the author of violating elementary rules of professional honesty .
