The synagogue in Rhens , a town in the Mayen-Koblenz district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was a synagogue that was set up in an older house in 1832 and set on fire during the 1938 November pogroms .

history

The Jewish community of Rhens initially had a prayer room. In 1832 an older house - 1668 in the lintel - was bought and converted into a synagogue.

The plastered building with a hipped mansard roof and arched windows on the upper floor could only be financed with great effort for the small Jewish community .

time of the nationalsocialism

On November 10, 1938 , the synagogue was set on fire by SS men and members of the Hitler Youth . The synagogue building was retained and converted into a residential building.

Commemoration

A memorial plaque on Langgasse 9 commemorates the former synagogue.

Monument protection

The former synagogue of Rhens is a protected cultural monument according to the Monument Protection Act (DSchG) and entered in the list of monuments of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate . It is located at Langstrasse 9 .

The former synagogue of Rhens has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley since 2002 .
