Synagogue (Beaumarais)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The synagogue was located in the Saarlouis district of Beaumarais . It was built between 1844 and 1850 in what was then Muhlenstrasse. Today there is a residential building at this point.

history

Until the middle of the 19th century, the Jewish community in Beaumarais used the synagogue in neighboring Wallerfangen together with the local Jewish community. After tensions between the two communities and a short-term separation already arose in 1817, the Beaumarais Jewish community built its own synagogue between 1844 and 1850 in what was then Muhlenstrasse (the street name is now In der Muhl ). It was a simple hall building with a gable roof 12.50 meters long, 8 meters wide and about 6 meters high. There were three large arched windows in the house wall facing the street. The opposite side of the building, however, only had one such window. There was a round window in the gable wall above the entrance. A new construction of the synagogue planned for 1891 could not be carried out because the Ministry of the Interior did not allow the application for financial support and the necessary funds could not be raised by the community. From around 1936 the synagogue was no longer used as such, but according to the sources it was still inhabited. The building was empty from 1945 to 1962. From 1962 it was used as a warehouse before being dismantled in 1967 except for the walls below the window sills. This was followed by an increase in floors and the conversion to a residential building. The house is still preserved today (In der Muhl 3).

Beaumarais Jewish Community

Jewish families in Beaumarais are mentioned for the first time in 1783. At that time, a total of 12 Jewish families lived in the two communities of Beaumarais and Wallerfangen. With the construction of the synagogue, Beaumarais became an independent religious community. In 1863 a synagogue association was first mentioned in Beaumarais. Since there was no cemetery of their own, the dead were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Dillingen and the Jewish cemetery in Saarlouis . In addition to the synagogue, the community also had a religious school. In 1892 the community hired a religion teacher who also held the duties of a prayer leader and a shochet . The number of parishioners grew steadily. In 1895 there were 50 people in the parish. However, over the next few years the number continued to decline. In 1935 there were still 24 members of the Jewish community living in Beaumarais, most of whom emigrated after the referendum in 1935 and the associated annexation of the Saar area to the German Reich . With that, the Jewish community in Beaumarais dissolved.
