The synagogue was built from 1863 to 1865 on the upper market . A Jewish school has been located on the site on which the Renaissance Neunkirchen Castle previously stretched. Remnants of the wall from the old castle were used for the construction. The municipality of Neunkirchen supported the construction with 500 thalers . The inauguration took place on December 1, 1865. Part of the street leading to the synagogue was renamed Synagogenstraße, the rest of this street became Maze Street.

After the Saar referendum in 1935, the National Socialists came to power in the Saar area . They changed the name by extending Maze Street. The synagogue itself was destroyed on November 10, 1938 , during the Night of the Reichspogrom . The building then stood empty and was completely destroyed during the bombing of World War II.

After the war, a residential and commercial building was built on this site. In 1978 a memorial plaque was hung. Efforts have been made since 1988 to commemorate the Jewish institution that was destroyed by the National Socialists. At the initiative of the Protestant youth department Ottweiler and by resolution of the city council, part of the upper market was renamed Synagogenplatz on September 21, 1994.
