Synalpheus pinkfloydi is on the Pacific coast of Panama occurring Zehnfußkrebsart (Decapoda) from the family of alpheidae (Alpheidae). The first descriptors dedicated the species tothe rock band Pink Floyd on the basis of large pink scissors and suggest the common name Pink Floyd pistol shrimp .
features
Synalpheus pinkfloydi reaches a maximum body length of 6.6 millimeters in females. The male holotype is 5.5 millimeters long. The carapace and abdomen are yellow-gray to olive-green in color and slightly translucent. The crabs have long antennae , the first pair of limbs is formed like scissors. The two scissors are of different sizes. The larger one is brightly pink to red ("pink") in color and stronger in the males than in the females.
Way of life
Synalpheus pinkfloydi lives mostly hidden in coral rubble rock crevices and joints of hard corals . When the previously opened scissors are closed extremely quickly, a jet of water is ejected in a flash, creating a cavitation bubble which implodes with a very loud bang. This special feature is used as a warning, in combat with conspecifics, when catching prey or for intra-species communication. Prey animals such as worms or small fish can be stunned or even killed by the sound pressure generated .
Distribution and occurrence
The species occurs on the Pacific coast of Panama and has been detected around the Pearl Islands . It prefers to stay in shallow water on coral reefs . In the first description, the authors mention (as a bon mot) that due to the lack of suitable habitats it is unlikely that Synalpheus pinkfloydi will occur on the Dark Side of the Moon (German: "The dark side of the moon").
Similar species
Synalpheus pinkfloydi can be distinguished from the outwardly very similar species Synalpheus antillensis on the basis of genetic characteristics. The sequence divergence of the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI), a mitochondrial DNA, is 10.2%. The similar species occurs only in the western Atlantic . Thus there is no geographical overlap with Synalpheus pinkfloydi .
