Order : Pipefish-like
Scientific name
Syngnathiformes

The order of the pipefish (Syngnathiformes) unites fish that differ greatly in their physique from other fish groups. They live worldwide, especially near the coast near the sea floor, in rocky and coral reefs and algae and seagrass meadows. However, there are also pelagic species and freshwater fish among the pipefish . The most famous animals among the pipefish are the seahorses .

features

Pipefish tend to have a slim body, often with bone plates in the skin. Many species lack ventral fins or ribs. The three to six anterior vertebrae are elongated in many species. Most types, except for the red mullet , the air valves and the genre of the cone head Jianzui ( Bulbonaricus ) have a pointed nose, the plurality of even a tubular pipette snout to the food suck, are toothless or have very small teeth. In most cases the only bone around the eye socket is the lacrimal bone (os lacrimale), the other bones of the orbit are usually missing.

Internal system

Nelson divides the order into seven recent families with over 60 genera and over 260 species. In the latest revision of the bony fish system, Ricardo Betancur-R. and colleagues also the flying cocks (Dactylopteridae) and the lyrefish-like (Callionymoidei) with the families lyre-fish (Callionymidae) and dragon- fly- fish (Draconettidae), as well as the mullets (Mullidae) in the order of the pipefish-like. These assignments are based on DNA comparisons and are not yet or hardly supported by morphological similarities.

Thomas J. Near and colleagues confirm the position of the Dactylopteridae and Callionymoidei within the Syngnathiformes, assign Syngnathiformes and Mullidae in the same clade, but as sister groups . For Song and his colleagues, the mullets are part of the Syngnathiformes.

Thus the following taxa can be assigned to the pipefish species:
