The Tärendöälven (or Tärendö älv ) is a tributary of the Kalixälven in Norrbotten County in Sweden . After the Brazo Casiquiare in Venezuela, it is the second largest river bifurcation in the world outside of delta estuaries.
The Tärendöälven branches off from the Torneälven in the municipality of Pajala . This origin is located near the place Junosuando at an altitude of 210 m. It takes more than 50% of the water of the Torneälven with it.
It flows 52 km to the southeast and runs through Lautakoski and Koijuniemi and then drains at 160 m altitude in Tärendö in the Kalixälven .
The right tributaries of the Tärendöälven are Merasjoki, Leppäjoki, Saittajoki and Jukkasjoki. The Karijoki is a left tributary.
The river is very popular with anglers, as are many bodies of water in the North Calotte .
