Takaka is a place in the Tasman District on the South Island of New Zealand .
geography
The place is located about 34 km north-northwest of Motueka in the southeast of Golden Bay directly on New Zealand State Highway 60 . The Takaka River flows west past the place and flows a few kilometers north into the Golden Bay . About 23 km south is the small settlement Upper Takaka , also on the Takaka River and on State Highway 60 . Another settlement called East Takaka is halfway between the other places.
geology
West of the Abel Tasman National Park , starting from the Pikikiruna Range in a south-westerly direction over the 791 m high Takaka Hill to the Arthur Range, there is an area in which marble is found and quarried. Other natural resources such as gold , silver , copper and asbestos can also be found in the area.
history
Takaka was founded in 1854. Gold was found in the Takaka area in the late 1850s , but the resulting gold rush lasted only for a short time. A few years later, the prospectors moved to Otago when the Otago gold rush began there. In the 1960s, the place became attractive to artists and artisans.
population
The 2013 census determined 1236 inhabitants for the place. That is 7.6% more than in 2006.
economy
Today you can find an arts and crafts scene in the place, which is mainly characterized by painters, potters, blacksmiths and jewelry manufacturers.
Attractions
A local museum that presents the history of the place, a gallery in the post office built in 1899, which shows the work of regional artists, and the Abel Tasman National Park to the east are among the attractions of the place and its surroundings.
Sports
For sports activities, surfing in Golden Bay , kayaking on the Takaka River, and paragliding from the surrounding hills are all available.
