TP Meenakshisundaram

Thenpattinam Ponnuswamy Meenakshisundaram ( Tamil தெ. பொ. மீனாட்சிசுந்தரம் ; born January 8, 1901 in Chengalpattu district , Madras presidency , British India ; † August 27, 1980 ; also known as Te Po Meenkshisunadaranar ) was an Indian scholar and Tamil and English-speaking writer . He was founding principal of Madurai Kamaraj University .

Life

Meenakshisundaram was born in 1901 in Thenpattinam in what was then the Chengalpattu district of the Madras presidency as the son of S. Ponnusami Gramani. He studied at Pachaiyappa's College , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1920 , a Bachelor of Laws in 1922 , a Master of Arts in History in 1923 and a degree in economics. After he began his career as a lawyer in 1923 and served in 1924 in the Madras Corporation Council, he was from 1954 to 1958 Professor of Tamil at Annamalai University and until 1961 at the Presidency College in Chennai . He was director of the Center for Advanced Study in Dravidian Linguistics at Annamalai University and was appointed founding rector of Madurai Kamaraj University in 1966 , a position he held until 1971.

Meenakshisundaram has authored several books in Tamil and English. He is best known for his Allegations of Tirukkural , published in English in 1919, as well as Philosophy of Tiruvalluvar , A history of Tamil Language , A history of Tamil Literature and Aesthetics of the Tamils . He has received several awards, including the Tamil Nadu Sahitya Akademi Award (1975) and honorary doctorates from Madurai Kamaraj University (1967), the University of Colombo (1973) and Annamalai University (1976). He was also awarded the Padma Bhushan , the third highest civil order in India, by the government of India in 1977 for his contribution to literature and education.

Meenakshisundaram died at 79 on August 27, 1980. After his death, Dr. TP Meenakshisundaram Endowment Prize from Madurai Kamaraj University established in his honor.
