TIBCO Spotfire

TIBCO Spotfire Analytics is a commercial software platform for business intelligence solutions for the systematic analysis of company-internal and external data. Manufacturer TIBCO Software Inc . The software has a modular structure . In contrast to the classic approach of business intelligence solutions, which are predominantly past-oriented and descriptive, one of the main focuses of TIBCO Spotfire is the generation of predictive analyzes . This means that the software is more likely to be assigned to the "Business Analytics" or "Data Discovery" division .

History and Development

The underlying technology of the software was developed in the early 1990s at the human-computer interaction laboratories at the University of Maryland, College Park . The Swedish visiting student Christopher Ahlberg worked with Ben Shneiderman on the development of applications for dynamic queries. After his return to Sweden, Christopher Ahlberg created a Unix- based tool for visualization and exploration (IVEE - Information Visualization and Exploration Environment) at Chalmers University of Technology and founded Spotfire in 1996 with a development center in Gothenburg (Sweden) and the company's headquarters in North American Cambridge (Massachusetts) . In 2007 TIBCO Software Inc. took over the Swedish software company and integrated Spotfire into its own product portfolio. TIBCO combined the existing real-time infrastructure solutions with the company-wide scalable analysis technology of the Spotfire platform and developed a server add-on ( TIBCO Spotfire Operations Analytics ), which enables business intelligence for real-time process management. In 2008 TIBCO acquired the Insightful Corporation and supplemented the enterprise analytics platform with the integration of S + technology. In further development steps the TIBCO Spotfire S + server (today TIBCO Spotfire Statistics Services) was developed and the compatibility with TIBCO Spotfire S + , the TIBCO Spotfire Miner and the open source R environment was extended. On February 2, 2009, TIBCO Spotfire presented a version of the enterprise analytics platform in German, French and Japanese for the first time.

Current version: TIBCO Spotfire 7.9

Structure and scope of functions

Various adaptable client and server solutions, add-ons and industry solutions enable users to set up a user-oriented BI solution in the company. The main product features are numerous visual display and analysis options, the simple integration of large data sets in a wide variety of formats, the integrated statistical applications, the ability to generate predictive analyzes and a special module for automated data mining .

Despite the statistical background, the software can be used by users without in-depth technical or statistical knowledge. Data filters enable interactive analyzes, which can be adjusted or changed at any time using drag and drop . The interactivity and visual processing of the analyzes enable the user to identify unexpected relationships, trends and outliers. Any definable trend lines are also part of the analysis methods available.

TIBCO Spotfire Analytics also differs from other tools in the field of business intelligence in the speed with which analyzes can be carried out and the ability to adapt to the specific challenges of the respective area of application. TIBCO Spotfire Analytics combines in-memory and out-of-memory analysis. TIBCO Spotfire can be run on both the Apple iPad and Android tablets. The possibilities of collaborative work also differentiate the Spotfire platform from the solutions of other providers. With the help of annotations and bookmarks, other users can specifically point out abnormalities, evaluations of data and outliers or these can be marked for other users. With the new Spotfire 4.0 version, TIBCO has enhanced these features with additional functionalities from the area of social business networks.
