TRT-1 is the first television program of the public radio and television company TRT in Turkey. The program is the broadest range of the 14 TRT television channels.

history

At the end of the 1960s, the Turkish government debated for a long time whether investing in television was worthwhile. When it started broadcasting in 1968, a television signal only reached the Ankara metropolitan area, which had a population of around one million at the time . The other major cities had to wait until the 1970s for television to be broadcast. It was not until the mid-1970s that the television program was broadcast across the country. Televisions were luxury items that had to be imported. Until 1980 it was only broadcast in black and white. Today, television has left radio far behind in terms of daily reach and popularity. Until TRT-2 started broadcasting in 1986 (at that time still TV-2 ), today's 1st program as Ankara Televizyon, later TRT-Televizyon, was not only the only TV channel of the TRT, but also the only program in Turkey. With the start of the second program , the station was initially renamed TV-1 until the 1990s and then received its current name TRT-1.

Competitive situation

TRT-1 mainly competes with private broadcasters such as Kanal D and Show TV . After the deregulation of the market in 1993 and the introduction of private television, the number of viewers on TRT-1 collapsed and a large part of the advertising market collapsed as the private broadcasters made more advertising time available. These problems persist today.

TRT-1 can be received in analogue terrestrial and via satellite throughout Turkey and the program is also fed into the Turkish cable networks. The station can also be received on the TRT website as a live stream. TRT-1 broadcasts the teletext service "Telegün".
