Taça Independência

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Taça Independência (Portuguese for: Cup of Independence ) was an international football tournament that took place in Brazil between June 11th and July 9th in 1972. The occasion was the 150th anniversary of Brazil's independence from Portugal. 18 national teams and 2 continental representations (Africa and CONCACAF) took part in the tournament, which is why it was also referred to as the "Mini World Cup" in Germany. Brazil faced Portugal in the final on July 9 at the Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro and won by 1-0. The Yugoslav Dušan Bajević was the tournament's top scorer with 13 goals.
