Tables of Content is a 1986 Canadian animated short film directed by Wendy Tilby .

action

A man enters a restaurant. He sits down at a table and orders a drink. The other guests form closed groups around him: a lady is bored while her companion plays a sleight of hand. A group of men in dark suits sit stiffly and motionless around a table. An elderly lady receives an ice cream sundae, which she passes on to her husband, and a birthday group with women, men and a dog watches the jubilarian who holds a large cake with burning candles in front of her.

The man starts reading a newspaper. The mood in the restaurant is sluggish and when fish is served at another table, the waiter stops to read the comic in the newspaper. The man turns the pages and later begins to solve a crossword puzzle. He looks at the clock, it is shortly before 8 p.m. He quickly empties his glass and leaves the restaurant. The waiter finds the coin for the drink under the newspaper. It's dark outside, it's raining.

production

Wendy Tilby created Tables of Content as a graduation film at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design , working intermittently with Amanda Forbis . She animated the film in color on glass. The film's publication rights were acquired by the National Film Board of Canada : Tilby subsequently became an animator in the NFB studio in Montreal .

Awards

Tables of Content won the 1986 Grand Prize of the Montréal World Film Festival in the Best Short Film category. In 1987 it was nominated for a Genie Award for Best Animated Short Film and in 1988 it received an OIAF Award from the Ottawa International Animation Festival for Best First Work.
