The Emily Carr University of Art and Design (ECU) is a design and art college with university status in the Canadian city of Vancouver . Named after the Canadian painter and writer Emily Carr , it specializes in ecological design, visual arts, media, interactive media, animation, industrial design, and general performing arts.
history
The school was founded in 1925. At the beginning it was called Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts , then Vancouver School of Art: Decorative and Applied (from 1933), Vancouver School of Art (from 1937), Emily Carr College of Art (from 1978) and Emily Carr College of Art and Design (from 1981). In 1995 it was renamed the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (ECIAD). The institute kept this name until April 28, 2008, when the institute became a university. However, the name change was only completed on September 1, 2008.
campus
The university is based in various locations in Vancouver. First, the main campus is located southwest of the city center on the Granville Island peninsula and is housed in two buildings, the northern building being a former fish processing factory. A second campus on the Great Northern Way east of the city center is operated in conjunction with the British Columbia Institute of Technology , the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University .
