Development and publication

After a successful crowdfunding campaign in February 2014, the game was developed by Berserk Games , the developer studio of Jason Henry and Kimiko, as the first title and released in June of the following year. Henry already gained experience programming a mod for the game Chivalry: Medieval Warfare . Kimiko was a community manager for Chivalry and later a member of Torn Banner Studios . In an interview with Gamasutra , the two described that the game Desperate Gods was their source of inspiration and that they wanted to create a game that would make it possible to freely design and share all tabletop games.

In the crowdfunding campaign, the developers for the tabletop simulator earned $ 37,403 on Kickstarter with the support of 1,822 people. On March 15th, Berserk Games announced that they had successfully passed Steam Greenlight and are therefore entitled to offer the game for distribution on Steam . On June 5, 2015, the game was officially released on Steam.

In May 2016 it was announced that the game would be better optimized for virtual reality and in June a special version for the HTC Vive was released .

reception

Dailypad praises the many possibilities of the simulation, which cannot be compared with other computer game collections , since emphasis is placed on a real tabletoper experience through a corresponding physics engine and not the abundance of programmed games is in the foreground. Therefore, the experiences with other players and the large amount of community content are decisive for success. Compared to the analog variants, a lot of space, money and effort is saved by z. B. dismantling, assembly and meetings saved. Criticisms include the legality of the community content due to the lack of copyrights , as well as problems with performance and familiarization. The tabletop simulator gained fame through numerous Let's Play videos on YouTube .
