Takashi Seki (archaeologist)

Takashi Seki ( Japanese 関 隆 志 Seki Takashi ; born February 16, 1939 in Kyōto , Kyōto Prefecture ) is a Japanese classical archaeologist . As a researcher, he dealt with Greek ceramics, architecture and sculptures from the time of the Geometric Style to the end of Hellenism . He also researched the art of the Roman Empire . He has been an honorary member of the Athens Archaeological Society since 1987 . As a member of the international scientific committee and editorial committee, he worked on the Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae . Since 1997 he has been a guest member of the German Archaeological Institute and professor emeritus at the Osaka City University .

Life

Seki was born in Kyōto in 1939 and attended the "Nishinomiya High School in Hyōgo Prefecture" ( 兵 庫 県 立 西宮 高等学校 ). He studied linguistics at the International Christian University in Mitaka , Tokyo , but also dealt with cultural and social sciences and worked as an interpreter at international conferences until 1969. From 1970 he studied classical archeology at the Ruhr University Bochum with Bernard Andreae , Klaus Fittschen and Volker Michael Strocka . In 1975 he became a research assistant in the archeology department in Bochum. In 1978 he received his doctorate with the thesis "Investigations into the relationship between vessel shape and painting of Attic bowls" ( ア ッ テ ィ カ 杯 の 形状 と 装飾 画 の 相関 関係 の 考察 ). In 1980 he returned to Japan and taught at the universities of Kwansei-Gakuin , Shimane and the Kobe Women's University. In 1982 he became an assistant professor at Osaka University, where he taught from 1987 until his retirement in 2001. With the support of a travel grant, he visited museums in 14 cities in six different countries and published his results in 1985 in the work “Investigations on the relationship between the shape of vessels and the painting of Attic bowls” by Gebr. Mann Verlag . From 2002 to 2009 he worked as a professor emeritus at the University of Takarazuka .

During a long research stay to investigate the Olympia sanctuary , he attended the funeral of Melina Mercouri in Greece in 1994 and published an obituary in the Asahi Shimbun .
