Euergides

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Euergides ( ancient Greek Εὐεργίδης ) was a Greek potter who lived in the last quarter of the 6th century BC. BC in Athens mainly produced bowls.

At least twelve signatures from him have been preserved on red-figure bowls, all of which were decorated by the so-called Euergides painter . The large bowls of the Euergides were initially thick-walled and massive, but over time the wall thickness and the thickness of the base plate decreased, so that their shapes became lighter overall. Its small bowls had a solid and firm footplate and were of a rather compact shape. Almost all bowls of the Euergides show the foot type B with profiles formed in a uniform line. He is therefore to be regarded as younger than Hischylos , who was the first potter to change the base of the bowl towards a reduced base plate, and was apparently a contemporary of Kachrylion , to whom the invention of the type B bowl is ascribed.
