Onesimos was an Athenian vase painter of the red-figure style. His creative period spanned the years 505 BC. BC to 485 BC BC. He was a student of the Euphronios and worked for a long time in the workshop. Together they developed the drawing style of red-figure painting for drinking bowls. Onesimos is considered to be one of the most talented painters of the red-figure style. His work resembles in many ways that of his master Euphronios. Since he initially had a slightly different way of working, his early work was initially collected under the name Panaitios painter . As was customary, he turned frequently in adolescent boys is that it first with Leagros called and Panaitios later are his ephebes Athenodotos, Lykos and Erothemis. Especially in his early creative phase, he describes them with the addition of kalos (beautiful).

In addition to bowls, the artist also painted kyathoi , plates, phials and other shapes related to the symposium . His motives are often the aristocratic everyday life, especially of young men: school, sport, weapon training and handling horses. In addition, he drew symposium pictures, some of which were quite rough and show the result of high wine consumption: quarrels and vomiting. Also Hetärenbilder are known by him. His mythological pictures sometimes go beyond the frame of the picture carrier. There is a satyr who presses a maenad from a lofty height or a satyr sitting on an amphora . There are seldom heroic war scenes from him. He preferred to paint signs of hope: Theano , who receives asylum with the Greeks, or Aithra , who embraces her grandchildren.

Around 150 vases have been preserved from Onesimos today. His signature, translated as useful , can only be found on the Louvre G 105 bowl, which, however, was not the highlight of his work. His connection with Euphronios is nevertheless recognizable, as the equestrian image shown is reminiscent of a work by his master and the bowl bears the signature of Euphronios.
