Louvre painter G36

Painter of Louvre G 36 is the emergency name of a Greek vase painter who lived towards the end of the 6th century BC. Was active in Athens .

Shell in the British Museum

The painter from Louvre G 36 , who was active around the same time as the so-called “ pioneer group ” of the red-figure style , was one of the earliest red-figure bowl painters . Like other bowl painters of this time, the painter from Louvre G 36 tested the possibilities of the new technology due to the comparatively smaller work surface - the inside and the two outer sides of the bowls - not yet to the same depth as the representatives of the pioneer group on larger vases did, but the bowl painters also contributed to the success of the new style.

In addition to two bowls from the Campana collection , the Louvre owns four bowls signed by the potter Kachrylion . These have the inventory numbers G 35 to G 38. G 35 was painted by the Hermaios painter and has no major similarities with the three other bowls when painted. The other three shells are quite similar. The middle bowl is qualitatively better than the other two. It was assigned to the Thalia Painter by John D. Beazley . With the other two bowls, Beazley recognized a common painter's hand. After one of the two bowls with the inventory number G 36, the vase painter is now referred to by his emergency name.

Among the tens of thousands of red-figure Attic vases and vase fragments that have survived, Beazley found four more bowls, or in three cases fragments of bowls, which are very reminiscent of the two works by the painter from Louvre G 36 , but are probably not in his hand. Yet he did not want to see a group in these six vases . Almost all bowls and fragments show athletes, whereby these can be shown on the outside as well as in the tondo (inside). In addition, comasts are shown several times , mythological images are the exception.
