Makron (vase painter)
Makron ( Greek Μάκρων ) was a Greek vase painter of the red-figure style who lived from around 500 to 470 BC. Was active in Athens . He worked closely with the potter Hieron , almost all of the vessels signed by him are painted by Makron. John D. Beazley attributed 339 works to him, 330 of which are bowls . Norbert Kunisch was able to increase the number of his works in his monographic study on the artist.
He painted vessels in large quantities and served the mass market. Despite this extensive production, he never simply repeated himself in his pictures and motifs. Again and again he succeeded in developing new forms of movement and relationships, so that his creative power did not suffer from the monotonous work routine. His favorite subjects were depictions of the como and the symposium , love scenes, scenes with boys and athletes. He also devotes himself, if only rarely, to the Dionysian Thiaos and, even more rarely, to myths.
His early works are characterized by extensive compositions with numerous overlapping figures. With his further development, however, he soon found pleasure in less extensive figure ensembles. He concentrated more on the representations of individual large figures and their relationships to one another. In the outer and secondary images, he adhered more strictly to given shapes, which, however, never seem boring due to their non-repeating elements.
He worked a lot for export to Etruria , but also for the Greek market.
