Painter of the horse of Boulogne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The painter of the horse of Boulogne ( English Painter of the Boulogne Horse ) was a Greek vase painter , the late sixth or early in the 5th Century. Chr. In Athens worked.

The painter of the horse of Boulogne , who was active around the same time as the so-called “ pioneer group ” of the red-figure style , was one of the earliest red-figure cup painters . Like other bowl painters of this time, the painter of the horse of Boulogne did not test the possibilities of the new technique to the same depth as the representatives of the pioneering group on larger vases due to the comparatively smaller work surface - the inside and the two outer sides of the bowls did, but the bowl painters also contributed to the success of the new style. He designed the inside pictures of his eye cups in the old black-figure style , the outside pictures red-figure.

John D. Beazley recognized the handwriting of the vase painter within the ten thousand-part inventory of well-known Attic red-figure vases and fragments and fundamentally compiled his works. Beazley attributed only a few works to the painter, three in all. It got its emergency name from fragments of an eye cup that are now in the Musée Boulogne-sur-Mer and the Museo archeologico nazionale di Firenze . In the external images, they show horses between the usual eyes of the eye cups. Beazley assigned a total of three fragments and a restored bowl to the painter, while Dietrich von Bothmer assigned a fifth bowl .

The palmettes next to the handles and the eyes of the painter have a special feature. Her heart, designed in red, is bordered at the top by a pair of relief lines , with the petals breaking through this demarcation. This form of breaking through the relief line can be found on four other bowls, including a bowl of Phintias . In these, however, the flowers and the palmette heart are designed differently.
