Oltos ( ancient Greek Ὄλτος ) was in Athens active vase painter of Spätarchaik . From the time from 525 to 500 BC About 150 works by the painter have survived, mainly bowls, of which bowl F 2264 in Berlin ( Antikensammlung Berlin ) and bowl RC 6848 in Tarquinia ( Museo Nazionale Tarquiniese ) are signed.

Oltos began his work in the pottery workshop of Nicosthenes . Initially, Oltos mainly designed bilingual vases with black-figure inside and red-figure outside. His black-figure style is influenced by Psiax and the Antimenes Painter . Purely black-figure works by Olto are still unknown today. The shell pictures are mostly single-figure and charged with tension, different directions of movement and gaze are not uncommon. Oltos later devoted himself entirely to red-figure painting, where he was influenced by the Andokides painter and several representatives of the so-called pioneer group , above all his former pupil Euphronios .

His drawings were flat and elegant, but never reached the level of detail of other red-figure masters. He had a particular fondness for lavish ornamentation and symmetrical compositions. In the middle phase of his career, Oltos devoted himself to depicting mythological scenes. Over time, Oltos worked with several potters. There is evidence of collaboration with at least six: Hischylos , in a special way Pamphaios , with whom he created the first stamnos , Tleson , Chelis , finally Kachrylion , where he worked with Euphronios, and Euxitheos .

A new feature introduced by Oltos can be found on an amphora ( London , British Museum E 258). Here he represented a single figure without a frame or stand line.
