Grandchildren
Enkelados ( Gr . Ἐγκέλαδος the raging , from κελαδέω; Latin Enceladus) is the name of a giant from Greek mythology .
ancestry
Enceladus is mentioned in the list of names in the library of Apollodorus as the son of Gaia and the blood of Uranus , which falls on Gaia when he is emasculated. In Virgil and in the list of names of the Dionysiacs of Nonnos , only the mother Gaia is mentioned. In the list of names in the Prefatio of Hyginus he is the son of Ge and Tartaros .
myth
In the Gigantomachy he is described as an opponent of Zeus , Dionysus or Athena . The most common is the constellation with Athena.
According to Pausanias , Athena threw her chariot and horses at him. In the library and with Callimachus she buried him under Mount Etna , after Philostratos she threw all of Sicily on him so that he could no longer rise up against the gods.
In Nonnos Dionysiaka , the grandchildren of Bacchus are thrown back with a hail of bullets made of leaves. Only when Gaia promises him Athena as bed-mate in the event of victory does he continue fighting. Dionysus burns Enkelados' body with a conflagration, but this is only defeated by a thunderbolt from Zeus.
Modern reception
The Saturn moon Enceladus was named after the giant in Latinized form.
