The phial ( Greek : ἡ φιάλη ) is a flat, handle and footless sacrificial bowl from ancient Greece .

It was used for giving drinks and for libations . Such sacrifices are depicted in Greek vase painting . This tradition was continued by other cultures, such as the Romans , who used the patera , a kind of saucepan, as a pontifical device.

The fountain bowl in a pillared courtyard is also known as a phial .
