Takashi Sugawa

Takashi Sugawa ( Japanese 須 川 崇志 , Sugawa Takashi , born February 1982 in Gunma Prefecture ) is a Japanese jazz musician ( double bass , cello , composition ).

Takashi Sugawa began classical training on the cello at the age of eleven, before switching to the double bass as his main instrument at the age of 18. He graduated from Berklee College of Music (2006); He then moved to New York City, where he met Masabumi Kikuchi , whose music had a great influence on his further musical development. During this phase he worked on Ori Dakari's album Entrances ( Tzadik ) with; he performed with guitarist Jake Hertzog at the 2007 Montreux Jazz Festival . In 2009 he returned to Japan to work in Tokyo. There he became a member of the Terumasa Hino quintet in 2010 , to which he was a member for a total of six years. He also played with the Kosuke Mine Quartet, Ai Kuwabara Trio Project, Tamaya Honda Trio and the Michiyo Yagi Trio, with whom he also performed at the Moers Festival in 2011 ; He was also involved in Shun Ishiwaka's debut album and is a member of the Michel Reis Japan Quartet . In 2018 he released his own debut album Outgrowing (Song X Jazz Inc), on which Leo Genovese (piano) and Tom Rainey (drums) had collaborated. In 2020 he released the album Looking Back from this Naked .
