( Kner , 1863)

Siebold's cichlid ( Talamancaheros Sieboldii , Syn .: Cichlasoma Sieboldii ) is a freshwater fish from the cichlid family that occurs in rivers in southern Central America that flow into the Pacific . The distribution area extends from Esparza in Costa Rica to the Río Sta María in Panama.

features

Siebold's cichlid can reach a length of up to 25 cm. Its body is elongated and laterally flattened, its head tapering towards the end mouth. Young fish are olive gray and show seven to eight vertical stripes on the sides of the body. In growing fish, the stripes widen in the middle and form a row of spots from the rear edge of the gill cover to the tail stalk. Adult animals are ultimately solid olive green. Their scales have red edges so they form a fine red mesh pattern. During the breeding season, the animals are light white-gray and the row of spots is visible again on the sides of the body. The spots are then partially fused together. On the back they show more or less distinct dark bands, the belly is white. The underside of the head is black. Two black, thin lines run between the eyes.

Way of life

Siebold's cichlid lives in the lower reaches of rivers that flow into the Pacific. The adult cichlids feed mainly on growth and algae, young fish on aquatic insects. Siebold's cichlid is a substrate spawner . A clutch comprises 200 to 300 eggs.

Systematics

Siebold cichlid in 1863 by the Austrian zoologist Rudolf Kner as Heros sieboldii described and after the German zoologist Carl Theodor Ernst von Siebold named. Later the species was assigned to the genera Cichlasoma , Paraneetroplus , Theraps and, most recently, due to morphological similarities, Tomocichla . In 2016, Siebold's cichlid became the type species of the newly introduced genus Talamancaheros .
