The Angostura dam ( Spanish Central [hidroeléctrica] Angostura ) is a run-of-river power plant on the Río Bío Bío in Chile . It is located in Region VIII , about 63 km southeast of the city of Los Ángeles in the municipality of Santa Bárbara and Quilaco . The Río Huequecura flows into the Bío Bío about 300 m above the dam . Approx. The Pangue dam is 30 km upstream .

In September 2008, the studies on the effects on the environment were submitted to the responsible authorities. Construction work began in February 2010. The impoundment was completed by mid-December 2013 and the first machine in the power plant went into test operation at the end of December 2013.

The dam is owned by Colbún SA and is also operated by Colbún.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure consists of a CFR dam (length 1.6 km, height 25 m) on the left (southern) bank of the Bío Bío and a gravity dam made of rolled concrete (length 125 m, height 63 m) across the river bed of the Bío Bío. The top of the wall or dam is at a height of 320 m above sea level .

The dam wall has a flood relief with six gates. A maximum of 10,200 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood relief. This corresponds to the design flood ; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once every 1,000 years.

In order to drain the water from the Bío Bío during the construction period, a tunnel (length 290 m, diameter 14.4 m) was built, through which a maximum of 2,000 m³ / s can be discharged.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 317 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 6.41 km² and holds 100 million m³ of water. In order to minimize the impact on the environment and to enable the reservoir to be used for tourism, this reservoir target may be lowered by a maximum of 1 m.

The reservoir has a length of 16 km in the Bío Bío valley and 5 km in the Huequecura valley. Near the dam, the depth of the lake is 50 m.

power plant

The Angostura power plant has an installed capacity of 316  MW . The average annual production is 1.542 billion kWh.

The three machines of the power plant are located in an underground machine house (length 177 m, width 30 m, height 59 m). Two of the Francis turbines produce a maximum of 135 MW each, the third a maximum of 46 MW. The turbines, generators and other electrical equipment were supplied by Alstom . The order value for this was 100 million . A 40 km long double line (220 kV , 470  MVA ) leads from the switchgear  to the Mulchén substation .

The height of fall is 50 m. The maximum flow rate is 300 m³ / s for the first two turbines and 100 m³ / s for the third turbine.

Others

The total cost of the project is different: $ 420, $ 671, $ 700 and $ 760 million, respectively . Originally the cost was estimated at $ 500 million.

More than 4000 people were employed on the construction site; on average there were 500 people who were employed at the same time, the maximum was 1200. 46 families had to be relocated for the dam.
