The dam Spremberg , including Spremberg reservoir called, is between Cottbus and Spremberg than damming the river Spree and forms with the surrounding landscape the nature reserve dam Spremberg . This dam , a dam made of earth, is the fourth largest dam in terms of area in Germany and the only dam in Brandenburg that is known as a "large dam". Your tasks are service water supply, flood protection, power generation, low water elevation and local recreation. Commissioning was on October 8, 1965.

history

dam

According to records from the Cottbus district building authority , the Spreewald was hit 124 times by floods between 1897 and 1933 . As a result, the residents could only bring in five normal harvests. In the 1920s, there were considerations about flood protection for the Upper and Lower Spreewald .

Problematic for the construction of a dam in this area were its geographical location and its topographical and geological conditions. It was not until the 1950s that a lowland dam was planned which, in addition to providing flood protection for the Spreewald, also served as a service water supply for the brown coal power stations . The dam, built between 1958 and 1965, together with the Quitzdorf and Bautzen dams, represents a pioneering achievement.

The small town of Neumühle in the Bräsinchen district ( Neuhausen / Spree municipality ) was flooded. The dam within the 3.7 km long dam is 2.2 km long with a crown height of 20 m. The reservoir is 7 km long and has a capacity of 42.7 million m³.

From 2005 to 2016, the dam was completely refurbished while operations continued. From 2011 to the end of 2013, the sediments deposited in the pre-dam Bühlow upstream of the reservoir were dredged. The renovation work should cost a total of 15 million euros.

During the drought and heat in Europe in 2018 , the water level fell several meters.

Recreation area

The Spremberg dam has developed into a popular recreational area, especially for near-by tourists from Cottbus and Saxony . There are two beaches on the side of Bagenz and that of Klein Döbbern . Camping is possible in both places. A well-developed bike and hiking trail, which is also popular with skaters , leads directly around the lake.

For a number of years it has happened again and again that the local recreation area "Spremberg Reservoir" can only be used to a limited extent. The causes are both the fluctuating water levels in the dam due to the ongoing renovation and the increasing pollution of the Spree as a result of the lignite opencast mining on the upper reaches.

Surroundings

Neuhausen airfield

The Neuhausen airfield offers sightseeing flights over Niederlausitz . Skydiving, hang gliding and ballooning are also possible.
