Taor ( Serbian Cyrillic : Таор) is a village in western Serbia . The village is located southwest of Valjevo .

geography

The village is located in the Opština Valjevo , in the Kolubara district in north-western central Serbia . Taor and its neighboring villages (also known as Povlenska Sela) are located in the region known as Užička Crna Gora ( Montenegro from Užice ).

These villages are surrounded by the Povlen Mountains . The villages are close to the source of the Skrapež river and all belong to the upper reaches of the river. In the village area, the Godeljača brook forms the Skrapež river, which flows through the village.

Taor extends along the Makovište ridge in a north-westerly direction. The village climbs the Mali Povlen mountain and crosses the mountain side on the Pavlova kosa slope towards Valjevo without touching the Srednji Povlen mountain. The village is dominated by the Taorska Stena .

Taor is a broad village, it begins on the eastern slope of the flat hilly Ravno Makovište , it crosses the Skrapež, extends over the headwaters of the Zabava and Valjevska Reka , climbs the high Povlen fields: Mravinjice, Šeovo , Ravni kraj and Kneževo Polje and ends on slope Povlenska Kosa , a slope of Srednji Povlen all in the area of Opština Valjevo. There are also many beech forests in the village .

The village area of this high mountain village is very hilly and rocky, with few fertile fields. Even if there are few fertile fields in Taor, they are very productive. These fields are concentrated around the ruins of Taor Castle and the Mravinjice field.

The place is on the Valjevo- Kosjerić road . Taor is located around 40 km southwest of Valjevo and around 16 km northwest of Kosjerić.

Hamlet of Taor

Taor consists of the following hamlets : Drpovina, Taorska Jelja, Donji Kuzmani, Gornji Kuzmani, Gačovići, Grahovići and Liješće. These hamlets together form the two parts of the village, Gornji Taor and Donji Taor.

history

Taor is divided into an old (Gornji Taor) settlement area and a new settlement area (Donji Taor). The old settlement areas are below Mount Anatem, on the stone slopes of Kamenita Kosa, below Crveni Brijeg, around the ruins of Taor Castle and below the slope of Gačova Stijena. Around the area of the well-known springs and waterfalls of Taorska vrela (a natural monument of Serbia) there are also old traces of settlement, including some old water mills. These headwaters flow into the Skrapež River here.

The older settlement areas are built on limestone , rather small and close together. The first inhabitants of the village, about whom little is known, appear to have either left the village or died out before the arrival of today's inhabitants. Today's families (Drpa, Veselinović, Jovanović, Milivojević, Kuzman, Grahović, Milovanović, Jevtović, Gačović, Trifunović, Pepić, Žerić, Zekić, Kleković, Đurić, Radosavljević and Šušović) come from the area of Pivaani (Banjani) for the most part Grahovo and Nikšić ) and settled the area in the early 18th century.

The newer settlement areas are more likely to be found around the fields of Šeovo, Mravinjice and the headwaters of the Zabava. The area in the Mravinjice field became more populated from 1884 onwards. Until 1959 these were two parts of the village, two independent villages, which were then united as the common village of Taor.

The ruins of Taor Castle stand on the limestone rock hill of the same name, Taorska Stena, above Skrapež on the way to the slope of Gačova Stijena. On the north side of the Kamenita Kosa slope are the remains of an old church ruin and other buildings.

population

Taor had 303 inhabitants at the 2011 census, compared to 378 in 2002. According to the last three population statistics, the number of inhabitants continues to fall. The population is made up of Serbian Orthodox Serbs .
