The Tararua Range or Tararua Ranges is a mountain range in the southern area of ​​the North Island of New Zealand , which runs parallel to the coastline for about 110 kilometers between Palmerston North and Upper Hutt . The widest area of ​​the mountain ridge is about 40 kilometers.

At its southern tip, the ridge merges into the Remutaka Range , which in turn forms the eastern flank of Wellington Harbor . South of Palmerston North, the Ruahine Range is the continuation of the Tararua Range, with the Manawatu River forming the natural boundary between the two mountain ranges.

Tararua Range

The only road that crosses the mountain range is from Palmerston North to Pahiatua . The road through the Manawatu Gorge , the section of the New Zealand State Highway 3 between Palmerston North and Woodville, is particularly susceptible to disabilities in winter, and the railway line from Napier to Wellington also runs here. To the south, New Zealand State Highway 2 winds over the mountains between Upper Hut and Featherston .

The Otaki River has its source in the Tararua Range and passes Mount Crawford on its way to the southwest.
