Tarbolton is a village in the Scottish Council Area South Ayrshire and the capital of the Parish of the same name . It is located about six kilometers west of Mauchline and eight kilometers east of Prestwick in north South Ayrshire. The Water of Fail , which flows into the River Ayr a few kilometers south of Tarbolton, flows directly to the northeast .

history

The Tarbolton settlement developed in connection with coal mining. Under John Cunninghame of Enterkine , the village received the rights of a Burgh of Barony in 1671 . Associated with this was the right to organize a weekly market. In 1780 Robert Burns founded a debating club in Tarbolton , the Burns Bachelors' Club . The 16th-century building at the junction of Montgomerie Street and Sandgate Street is now a listed building.

The neo-classical Tarbolton Parish Church dates back to the 1820s and is now classified as a monument of the highest Scottish monument category A. Wallace's Monument is located on a hill between Tarbolton and Symington . The neo-Gothic tower dates from the 1850s.

Between 1841 and 1881 the population of the village fluctuated around 1000. After 2260 inhabitants were counted in the 1961 census in Tarbolton, the number has steadily decreased since then to 1674 in 2011.

The B730 and the B744 cross in Tarbolton . With the A70 , A76 and A77, three trunk roads are accessible via these, each less than ten kilometers away. The Glasgow and South Western Railway opened a station in Tarbolton in 1870. However, this was closed in 1943. The Glasgow Prestwick Airport is located six kilometers west.
