The Tauernkogel is 2247  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the Salzburg Tennengebirge and belongs to the district of St. Johann im Pongau . The mountain top is dominated by a high summit cross and is partly covered with grass, but drops steeply to the northeast.

Ascent

The relatively easy but steep ascent to the summit leads from the south over the Tauernscharte ( 2109  m ) on the western flank of the mountain, where there are also some karst caves , especially the Tauernloch and the Eiskogel caves . The former can be reached via a narrow path just above the tree line , the latter on a marked path. The ascent from Wengerau (901 m) takes about 4 hours, halfway you come to the Dr.-Heinrich-Hackel-Hütte at around 1500  m . When it is wet, caution is advised in the summit area, as you can easily slip in the wet grass.

Closer surroundings

Some mountain peaks within a radius of only 1 km have similar heights as the Tauernkogel: the Napf ( 2167  m ) near the Tauernscharte, the double summit of the Eiskogel ( 2318  m at the summit cross and 2278  m ), the Teufelskirchl ( 2218  m ) and which can only be climbed from the east the rugged Brietkogel ( 2316  m ) in the north. The latter and the Tauernkogel fall eastward across ripplige steep walls in "the Briet" from above which the striking part from Latschen Encircled Augstein ( 2055  m rises). All in all an impressive high mountain landscape rich in caves, gullies and other karst phenomena .
