Temnozor ( Russian Темнозорь ) is a right-wing extremist Russian pagan / folk metal band from Obninsk .

history

The band was founded in 1996 by Tuur, Wuulko and Leshiy, followed shortly after by Gorruth and P.Noir, who is also active in the progressive metal band Rakoth. Gradually more musicians were added until the band got a recording contract with Stellar Winter Records in 1998. The line-up consisted at times of more than ten musicians. Some of the former musicians come from the environment of the Russian black metal circle Blazebirth Hall . In 1999 the debut album Sorcery is Strengthening the Black Glory of Rus was released , a re-release of the first demo . The first line-up broke up in 2000/2001. Among other things, Tuur and Wuulko left the band and were replaced by Ratibor and Svyagir, which means that none of the founding members is active today. For live performances and recordings, Temnozor were or are supported on vocals by Knjaz Varggoth and Saturious from Nokturnal Mortum and Rodoslav from the folk group Krynitza.

The demo Fragments was released in 2001 . In 2002, Sorcery of Fragments was a new release of the debut album including Fragments and the second album Horizons . The two albums were released across Europe on relevant NSBM, right-wing rock and RAC labels. Among other things, the albums were released on the German label Nebelfee Klangwerke , which was directed by members of the band Absurd .

Gorruth and Svyagir run a side project called Walknut , which became known beyond the borders of Russia.

Since the release of Haunted Dreamscapes , the band has played mainly at larger festivals in other European countries, most recently at the Steelfest Open Air in Finland, where Temnozor shared the stage with Unleashed , Dark Funeral and Satanic Warmaster .

In 2010 the band wanted to play on the Azijnfabriek stage in Roermond ( Netherlands ). The concert threatened to be canceled because anti-fascist groups put the organizers under pressure and referred to the band's connections to the NSBM scene. Due to anonymous threats and fears of rioting, the organizer "Hub & Huey" canceled the concert on January 4th. Temnozor then switched to a festival of the right-wing extremist organization Blood & Honor in Belgium at short notice .

Music style, lyrics and ideology

Initially the group Pagan Metal played with the flute accompaniment typical of the band. The first releases were relatively poorly produced, but that changed from Folkstorm of the Azure Nights . The mood is darker on Haunted Dreamscapes and acoustic guitars are used more and more.

The themes of the band are Slavic mythology and mysticism , natural romance and melancholy. Temnozor is a member of the Pagan Front, a worldwide association of NSBM and right-wing extremist Pagan Metal bands. Although the texts are not openly National Socialist, they are often played against a ethnic background. Apart from that, the band took part in a split release with the bands Graveland , Nokturnal Mortum and North, some of which were part of the NSBM scene .

In the first few years in particular, the band openly embraced (neo) nationalist ideology, the Aryan cult and the concept of the Racial Holy War . Main lyricist Illa Babin, known as Gorruth, is considered a " key figure in the neo-Nazi black metal underground " in Russia. The band released a number of albums from the NSBM scene on the Stellar Winter Records label, which he directed. The band also consisted of NS skinheads and NSBM musicians for a while. Some of the members also played in the right-wing rock band Vandal. The band represents a Slavic National Socialism, in which (contrary to the National Socialist racial ideology) the Slavs are added to the "Aryan race" alongside the Celts and Teutons .

The band has tried for several years to be perceived as apolitical in public, but against the openly racist and National Socialist background, these efforts are more of a protective claim. In various interviews, the members expressed that they were not interested in modern politics and took a position against political collectivism .
