The Tengnoupal district is located in the southeast of Manipur on the border with Myanmar . Neighboring districts are Imphal East and Kamjong in the north, Chandel in the south and Kakching and Thoubal in the west. In the east the district borders on the state of Myanmar.

The area of the Tengnoupal district is 1213 square kilometers. The district is a highland with numerous hills.

history

The current district was created in 2017 as one of the 7 new districts of Manipur from the sub-divisions Macchi and Tengnoupal of the (previous) district of Chandel. Since the Macchi sub-division was not established until 1994, the Tengnoupal sub-division corresponded to the area of the current district in the previous censuses in 1971, 1981 and 1991.

population

According to the 2011 census, the Tengnoupal district has 59,110 inhabitants. With 49 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is only sparsely populated. The district is clearly rural. Of the 59,110 residents, 42,263 people (71.5%) live in rural communities and only 16,847 people live in urban areas.

The Tengnoupal district belongs to the areas of Manipur that are mostly populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). They include (2011) 49,541 people (83.81 percent of the district's population). The largest groups are the Maring and Thadou . The native Manipuri are not part of the tribal population. In 2011, the Dalit ( scheduled castes ) numbered 460 people (0.78 percent of the district's population).

In those ten years the population increased by more than 10,000 people.
