Teodross Avery

Teodross Avery (born July 2, 1973 in Fairfield (California) ) is an American jazz musician (tenor and soprano saxophone)

Avery first took classical guitar lessons and switched to alto saxophone at the age of 13 . At 15 he jammed with Art Blakey and then with Elvin Jones , Freddie Hubbard and Dexter Gordon ; he then studied with Joe Henderson and at the Berklee School of Music . He was first noticed as a sideman from Carl Allen . According to the Jazz Rough Guide , his album My Generation (1996) is "astonishingly mature" and sometimes enriches his neobop with elements of rap and reggae as well as Middle Eastern sounds. He has performed with Roy Hargrove , Leela James , Roy Ayers and Ramsey Lewis and also worked for Dee Dee Bridgewater ( Dear Ella , 1997), Amy Winehouse ( Frank , 2003, also as a composer), Lauryn Hill , Shakira , Joss Stone , Mos Def , Pat Monehan, Aretha Franklin , Talib Kweli , Eddie Allen and Matchbox Twenty . As a composer and music producer, he also worked for film.
