Tephritis cometa is a fly from the family of bored flies (Tephritidae).
features
The predominantly gray colored borer flies reach a body length of 4 millimeters. The compound eyes shimmer red-yellow. The predominantly transparent wings have a species-specific black pattern of spots.
distribution
Tephritis cometa is widespread in Europe. They occur in the north as far as Scandinavia and Great Britain . In the east, the occurrence extends to the Middle East and East Asia.
Way of life
The bored flies can be found in meadows and on paths where their host plants grow. These include field thistle , Cirsium creticum subsp. gaillardotii , swamp thistle and common sea thistle . The adults are observed from March to October, most often at the beginning of August. The larvae develop in the flower heads of their host plants.
