Terminals Cycle is a video art film directed by Tim White-Sobieski . It consists of five single-channel videos recorded from 2001 to 2003 that deal with historical, current and abstract topics. The individual videos are:

  • Terminal I (Day At The Airport) , 2001–2002
  • Terminal II ( Terminal At Night , alias Flight In The Night ), 2002-2003
  • Terminal III (Terminal Dream) , 2003
  • Terminal IV (On The Wing) , 2003
  • Terminal V ( Terminal At Last alias Terminal Heart ), 2003

The film was made over three years on both analog and digital film material and has the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York City as its main subject, in which the artist's studio was destroyed. Terminals Cycle has been shown as a video installation in exhibitions in the United States , Spain , France , Germany , Japan , Denmark , Norway and Italy and has been mentioned in more than 40 publications.

Terminals

Terminal I (Day At The Airport)

Tim White-Sobieski, Terminal I (Day At The Airport) , exhibition view, 2001–2002

Terminal I is a single-channel video with a separate sound installation and shows images of Charles de Gaulle Airport as well as abstract animations that resemble ocean waves. The sound design also consists of the sound of the sea in the style of ambient music.

Terminal II (Terminal At Night)

Tim White-Sobieski, Terminal II (Terminal At Night) , still images, 2002

Terminal II was created under the impression of the 9/11 events in New York and contains images of the Cortland subway station in the Bronx as well as aerial photos of the city, whereby the artist wanted to give the project title a further meaning. Despite the historical reference point, the result was a film with a lyrical, peaceful aesthetic.

Terminal III (Terminal Dream)

Tim White-Sobieski, Terminal 3, (Terminal Dream) , three-channel video as an LED installation on a tube screen, 2003

Terminal III is more dedicated to video composition and editing and shows some technical innovations in animation. The series recordings are reminiscent of the aesthetics of Eadweard Muybridge .

Terminal IV (On The Wing)

Tim White-Sobieski, Terminal IV (On The Wing) , stills, 2003

Terminal IV is a further development of the philosophical and highly intellectual video projects of Tim White-Sobieski and connected to them through the same aesthetic ideas. The video should show a broad spectrum between spirituality and sensuality, with the simple things in life as well as maturity, balance and freedom being shown.

V Terminal (Terminal Heart)

Tim White-Sobieski, Terminal V (Cœur Terminal) ; Still image 2003

Terminal V is designed as a kaleidoscope of day and night shots and is intended to show the human heart as a kind of terminal in which all physical transitions, such as departures and arrivals, take place. A pulsating red permeates the views of an airport, images and shadows of transports and people move from top to bottom and from left to right through the picture.

Terminal Heart was part of the DVD release "Talents - The Art Video Collection".

production

The five videos consist of a total of 30,000 hand-painted individual images that were later digitized and reproduced as endless loops on DVD.

music

Brian Eno's album Drawn From Life was used as background music .

publication

The complete series was released in 2003 in a limited edition of 50 DVD sets and was shown for the first time in the Pilar Parra gallery in Madrid .

meaning

The artist bases his approach on the parable of the good Samaritan , who addresses charity . In the 17th century, in the midst of profound social change, René Descartes introduced the concept of the dualism of mind and body. Today we are caught in the dichotomy in which Descartes long ago proclaimed the separation of mind and body. However, we cannot live apart from relationships with others. Tim White-Sobieski tries to establish more intensive communication with the environment and the family. He advocates reconciliation and advocates accepting farewells and welcoming newcomers - especially in view of the human impermanence demonstrated by catastrophes and tremors.

Terminals also deals with the spiritual dimension of the human being. Confrontation with disasters or deadly diseases can be an impulse for spiritual advancement. The area around an airport becomes a symbol, it leaves impressions that enrich or diminish one's own spirituality in times of misery and despair.
