The Bistum Mtwara ( lat. : Dioecesis Mtuaranus ) is an in Tanzania preferred Roman Catholic diocese based in Mtwara .

history

The diocese of Mtwara was founded on December 22nd, 1931 by Pope Pius XI. Established with the Apostolic Constitution In Tanganikensi Africae from cessions of territory of the Lindi diocese as the territorial abbey of Ndanda . The Territorial Abbey of Ndanda gave on August 5, 1963 parts of its territory to the Diocese of Nachingwea. On December 18, 1972, the Territorial Abbey of Ndanda by Pope Paul VI. raised to the diocese of the Apostolic Constitution Cum omnibus and renamed the diocese of Mtwara . It was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam as a suffragan . On November 18, 1987, the Diocese of Mtwara was subordinated to the Archdiocese of Songea as a suffragan.
