Terrorist attack in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The terrorist attack in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier was a suspected Islamist attack on the morning of June 26, 2015, shortly before 10 a.m. local time. An assassin tried to blow up the production facilities of " Air Products & Chemicals ", a factory for industrial gases in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier near the city of Lyon . Several people were injured and one man was beheaded by the assassin.

Course of events

The assassin was employed by a transport company and came to the company premises together with his superior, who would later become the murder victim. Since the delivery company regularly supplied the factory facilities, the perpetrator was known to those responsible for the security check and was able to pass through them unhindered. A little later, several explosions occurred on the company premises, where numerous gas cylinders are stored. Twelve people were injured. Immediately before the bomb attack, the perpetrator beheaded his superior Hervé Cornara . The murdered man's head was found on a factory fence about ten meters from his body; it was hung up next to two flags pointing to so-called jihadism .

Perpetrator

The alleged perpetrator was overpowered by firefighters at the scene and confessed to the crime a short time later. It was Yassin Salhi, a 35-year-old family man with Algerian and Moroccan roots who lived in a suburb of Lyon. The investigating authorities were aware of Salhi's contacts with Salafist circles, but he had neither a previous conviction nor had the authorities linked him to criminal offenses. Neighbors described Salhi and his family as unremarkable.

Salhi confessed to the crime, but denied having acted on religious grounds or being a jihadist. Rather, he committed the act after quarrels with his wife and his boss, who later died. This information was opposed to the type of murder as well as the display of the severed head next to flags with confessions of faith in Islam; Salhi had also taken a photo of himself with his mobile phone, on which he was posing with his head. He had sent the recording to a mobile phone that had been assigned to a member of the terrorist organization “ Islamic State ” who was in Syria .

On December 22, 2015, Yassin Salhi hanged himself while in custody in his cell in Fleury-Mérogis prison .
